She stumbled back, shocked that an Omega dared to touch the future Luna. My mother's cheek still showed her handprint, her clothes soaked with spilled drink.
"Gina, no!" my mother cried, but I couldn't control my anger.
"How dare you hit my mom?" I growled, ready to strike again.
Suddenly, a powerful force slammed me against the wall. My back hit the cold stone, pain shooting through my body.
"Who are you to touch my Luna?"
Kane's hand gripped my throat, pinning me to the wall. His eyes turned dangerous gold, fangs slightly showing.
I struggled, clawing at his arm. "Let me go!"
He didn't move, as if my fight meant nothing.
"You'll pay for this, Omega," his voice rumbled low.
I heard my mother crying, kneeling on the floor, begging him to spare me. But Kane's eyes held only cold fury.
He didn't even remember who I was.
Eight years ago, he called me "fat pig," and now he wanted to punish me for protecting my own mother.
"What's happening here?"
Kane's father—the Alpha—walked down the hallway, his voice full of power.
Kane released my throat. I gasped for air, my hand against the wall for support.
The future Luna—Gwen ran to the Alpha, her face marked by my punch, pretending to cry. She was the woman from the prophecy who would mate with Kane, second in rank only to the Alpha family.
"She attacked me!" Gwen sobbed. "I was just talking to her mother!"
The Alpha's gaze fell on me, cold and full of disgust. He could smell I was an Omega, one without a wolf form.
"Take her to the dungeon," he ordered coldly. "Execute her at sunrise."
Guards grabbed my arms. I fought them, looking for my mother. She knelt on the floor, tears streaming down her face.
"Please," she cried, "she's my only daughter!"
The Alpha didn't even look at her.
As they dragged me to the dungeon, I looked back and saw Kane standing there, his face complex. For a moment, I thought I saw confusion in his eyes, as if he finally recognized me.
But he quickly turned away, placing a hand on Gwen's shoulder to comfort her.
Three hours ago, I had returned to Silver Moon Pack full of hope, wanting to surprise my parents who worked in the palace. Three years of cooking school were finally over, and I couldn't wait to tell them about my grades.
Now, I sat in a dark, damp dungeon, waiting for tomorrow's execution.
I curled up in the corner, arms around my knees. The dungeon smelled awful, but I had no energy to care.
My mind went back to that moment—Kane's hand on my throat, his body pressing against mine. His strength shocked me, but what shocked me more was my reaction.
Despite my anger and fear, my body responded strangely to his touch. A warm current spread from where he touched me, making my heart race.
I shook my head to clear these silly thoughts. He was a cruel Alpha who once bullied me and now wanted me dead. How could I feel anything for him?
The sound of the iron door interrupted my thoughts. I looked up to see a tall figure standing outside.
Moonlight through the small window outlined his perfect shape.
Kane.
He stood there alone, his amber eyes glowing in the dark, staring right at me.
"Gina?" his voice held disbelief. "Is it really you?"
