Chapter 6

Charlotte burst into tears as someone hastily ended the livestream.

Spencer called immediately, his voice shaking with rage:

"Have you lost your fucking mind? Do you have any idea what you've done?!"

"If Charlotte's career tanks, your sister is as good as dead!"

My heart squeezed painfully. My sister's life hung by a thread, and I was powerless.

Tears streamed down my face as my voice shook:

"If my sister dies, I swear to God I'll end you myself!"

He scoffed:

"If she dies, it'll be her stupid sister's fault!"

"If you'd just played along, she'd have gotten her donor!"

I sobbed until my chest burned, then screamed into the phone:

"After you threatened her, she left a suicide note and disappeared!"

"She wrote that she'd rather die than see me humiliated!"

"Are you happy now? You've destroyed us both!"

The line went quiet before Spencer finally spoke, his voice unnervingly calm:

"You know that wasn't what I wanted."

"It was an accident. They haven't found a body—she could still be alive!"

I broke down completely:

"That's the lie I keep telling myself. Do you honestly think she's coming back?"

He laughed cruelly:

"Your attention-seeking is pathetic! You'd curse your own sister just to play the victim!"

"I'm giving you one last chance. Fix this mess with Charlotte, and I'll get your sister that transplant immediately!"

I exhaled a broken sigh.

"Don't bother. She's gone."

Spencer went quiet for so long I thought he'd hung up.

"I'm sorry. I never thought it would go this far. I just wanted to scare her into talking to you."

"You never listen to me, but I knew you'd listen to her."

"When you think about it, this is really your fault. If you hadn't gone after Charlotte, your sister would be fine."

I was stunned by his breathtaking audacity.

"You betrayed our marriage and drove my sister to her death!"

"I want a divorce! You two deserve each other—and whatever hell comes your way!"

He laughed like I'd told the funniest joke he'd ever heard.

"You've been living off me for years. How exactly will you survive without me?"

"You're just angry. You love me too much to ever leave me."

I smiled silently, letting the truth sink in.

He'd begged me to quit my job, claiming he couldn't bear to see me struggle in the corporate world.

When he loved me, he was "supporting" me. Now that he didn't, he was "feeding" me.

How fucking convenient.

I ended the call without another word and called the best divorce attorney in town.

After a sleepless night, I made a decision: I would find my sister.

Until I saw a body, I would believe she was alive somewhere.
